Homemade Elderberry Syrup…aka The Black Death

The kids got sick. One and then the other…yet another cold. My youngest missed a full week of school. My oldest spent her weekend and a good portion of the week hacking. Cleaning my home isn’t enough….I can’t clean every surface they touch at school…can’t control other parents sending their sick kids. So my kids bring home everything and try to share it with me.

I’ve been basically home with them non-stop for 2 weeks. Started a new job last week (from home but that doesn’t mean I’m not required to work). I barely got any hours in; it was stressful. I’m the one who misses work when the children are sick 99% of the time. It’s not a pity party or an attempt to shame their father – it’s just the way it is. It’s the way it’s always been…..moving on!

I don’t put too much faith in homeopathic remedies. There are a few that are amazingly successful. All the talk about Elderberry syrup curing this and that….boosting immunity….I figured why not? I researched recipes with high ratings and set forth to Amazon to buy what I needed.

Organic Dried Elderberries and Raw Honey

I had the ginger and cinnamon sticks already – yay me! I simmered the little dried berries with the other stuff and strained them into a container. I added plenty of honey once it was cool enough because “it will give it a sweet flavor your kids will love!” Ha……..

I mean, who doesn’t want to try this?!

I decided to be the first victim once the dark, bitter sludge had cooled. I could stomach it….it was only a spoonful. But in my mind I knew there was no way in hell my kids were going to take this stuff. I added more honey. I googled ways to make it taste better. I had each of them try a drop and was immediately met with disgust. I figure maybe I can try to mix it in with a clear soda or ginger ale….like what we do with bad booze.

I had visions of this wonderful, sweet berry potion helping my children feel better faster and me not missing a week of work while on 2 or 3 hours of sleep a night. What I got was 1.5 cups of something that tastes like it may have been cooked with a boot.

The verdict: most likely never again. Will I take it? Yeah I have been; can’t let it go to waste. But honestly….I use a vitamin spray I found on Amazon. It’s called Nano Rush (Immunity Booster – pink bottle). I’ve used it for over 2 years now. I’ve watched everyone around me catch colds and various bugs and I’ve managed to avoid about 80% of it. I used to catch all of it along with them. It was me, the kids, and their father sharing cold after miserable cold. I also work at a haunted house seasonally- this has helped me avoid the infamous “haunt plague” or “haunt flu” as it’s known in the industry. I pretty much tell everyone I know “Hey go get this stuff!” I don’t get any kickbacks for telling people about it….it would be nice though. Link below.

Is it Spring yet?
